Cheap (household) alternative to proto-slow??

Along the lines already suggested, if you want to slow but not stop
pesky cilliates and flagelates, try making some 0.5% agar (plain, no
nutrients, in tapwater). It will be rather thick but still pour,
even when cool. Put a drop or 2 on your slide and add your sample
(1 drop) and mix. This works like a charm for slowing down water
mold spores which are very finicky and will drop their flagella and
encyst if made unhappy by noxious chemicals.
