# of doctoral degrees received by blacks in the US

The article in C&EN does not list the total # of PhDs in each category, 
except for mentioning in the text that 1992 there were more than 2000
chemistry PhDs with only 13 awarded to blacks.

I am *really* unsure of this, but I *think* that blacks are somewhere
around 10-15% of the US population, so the #'s above for chemistry
(less than 0.65%) are far below being representative.
