Lachlan Cranswick asked about sources of accurate information
about the Internet and Usenet. Most printed sources, certainly
popular newspaper and magazine articles, and even many of the
so-called Internet sourcebooks are simply unreliable and not
worth mentioning.
There are several newsgroups that carry relevant FAQs, and are
populated by some of the people who built and now run parts of
the Internet and Usenet. These include:
news.admin.misc
news.announce.newusers
alt.internet.services
Many of the points that Lachlan brought up are addressed in
"What is Usenet", a very old and well-known FAQ that is posted
frequently to news.answers and many other newsgroups.
Hope this helps,
