Common Forward Primers

I have been using RT-PCR to amplify two isozymes, M2- and L-type pyruvate
kinase. Due to the reasonable high homology between these two isozymes i
have been able to design a single common forward primer and 2 different
reverse primers, producing two different length products. I'm slightly
confused about the advantages of this method. Could someone please
recommend some appropriate papers. Thank you in advance
