multiplying smtp servers

I'm puzled, when I checked the number of sockets that DIS had oppened there were three SMTP
servers, but I wasn't sending any mail. Also downloading newsgroups was slow at <200bytes/sec.
When I checked again a few minutes ago, different login there are now six SMTP server connections, 
is this normal?
And should I be getting a better download speed, my modem is 14400 with MNP5?
Anyone with any ideas.
