Scanning figures-software/harware recommendations?

I would like to scan polaroids of (ethidium-bromide stained) gels so that I can
directly input them into a Macintosh.  Does anyone have experience with this?
What sort of scanner would you recommend? What would be the best software for
further "touch-ups"? I would like to eventually have slide/figure quality
representations of my gels in a format for output to a slide writer.
