Subscriptions...Info Needed

My wife will be attending the University of Texas at San
Antonio in the fall.  Her declared major is Clinical Laboratory
Sciences.
  I keep reading here about "subscriptions" to various
newsgroups/listservs.  How is this accomplished and which
ones would you recommend for the aforementioned major?
