Signal sequence and the "zip code" hypothesis

Signal sequence are small (10-30 amino acid) amino acid sequence found at
the animo terminus of nascent peptide. The function of the signal sequence
is to target proteins to the secratory pathway, i.e. the ER in eukaryotes
and the periplasm of prokaryotes. You can find info on this topic in any
modern introductory biochem or cell biology textbook.
