Active Biological Monitoring

I'm a journalist interested in information on projects involving Active 
Biological Monitoring, i.e. the use of animals or plants to monitor, 
survey or otherwise test for environmental hazards. I know some European 
countries have used fresh and saltwater mussels to monitor for 
pollutants; I'd like to hear of similar efforts stateside. Please respond
