The "Imponderables" series by David Feldman addresses such
questions. As a matter of fact, one of his books is entitled
"When Do Fish Sleep? and Other Imponderables of Everday Life".
I would type out his answer, but I think you'll enjoy his book
and will probably get his whole series, like I have.
