Inventory of a square yard

Sometime in the last few months I've seen messages go by in one of the 
bio groups from people who were in the process of catagorizing everything 
in a square yard. All the insects, minerals, bacteria, grass,etc. 
For some reason doing this has started to intrigue me enough to write 
this message. Does anyone know in what group this activity would be located?
