I would love to know the answer. Frankly, this has been the most interesting question posted to this group in some time. I note that the tree is a maple. The sap has a high sugar content (although especially in the early spring, of course). I vote for the hypothesis relating to licking plant juice. I bet the navy would fund this study/.
