    Be careful--1-800 numbers have a form of caller I.D. which is
used to charge you directly: yes, it is unfair, but it is widely
practiced.

     YOU CAN BE CHARGED FOR A 1-800 NUMBER, but it is a legal 
grey area and is, of course, frowned upon.
