The downsides to most biodegradable materials are: costs uncompetitive
with plastic packaging materials, poor performance when comapred to
plastics, and expensive disposal procedures (they do not degrade in
landfills and must be composted). Consumers would like biodegradable
materials but will not pay much of a premium and expect their
perfromance to be as good as plastic.
