architect genes as species creator ?

-a) Since architect genes can cause extra eyes or legs to a fly, would it
be possible that some mutation in some species could cause it to become
another ?

-b) Might this be the cause of some new species appearing in the course of
evolution ?

- c) Would this be at all reversible ?
