Look up in your text the chapter on cell respiration. This is the
energy releasing pathway which breaks down primarily glucose to
release energy in the form of ATP. Breathing allows the body to take
in oxygen from the air. This oxygen is necessary for cell
respiration to take place. When one molecule of glucose is broken
down in the presence of oxygen, 36 mol. of ATP are generated.
Without oxygen, only 2 ATP's are generated. Good luck with biology.
