Ritalin & Kids

Hi folks, a friend of mine has a seven year old boy who has been diagnosed as
having problems with constant attention seeking, he is also a bit on the 
overactive side but nothing violent.  The consultant he is seeing recommends
Ritalin treatment, but my friends gut reaction is very negative. Has anyone
out there any experience of the effectivness of Ritalin in treating overactive
children and any side effects.
