Forensic medicine

Can anyone tell me where to go to find out about forensic medicine in the
US in 1918? I particularly want to know whether it was possible at that
date for an autopsy to determine whether a drowning victim died in fresh
or salt water.

I'm a fiction writer, very much a non-scientist. If my questions are
