This issues tips:

** Windows 3.1 **

Have a need to open and close Windows several times, but your 
applications in the Start-up group are slowing you down? You can
bypass them by holding down the shift button as Windows loads.  

** Windows 95 **

Need to restart your computer, but don't necessarily want to wait
while your machine completely reboots, and runs through all of its
CMOS and BIOS tests and configurations? The restart needed can be
accomplished by doing the following:

Click Start, then Shut Down, when the dialogue box opens, press 
and hold the shift key, click restart computer, then ok. When the 
words "Restarting Windows" appears, you can release the shift button.

** Macintosh **

Hate to wait for the window to open when inserting a Cd-Rom? This
automation can be defeated by pressing and holding the option key
while inserting the CD (similarly, the auto-play function in 
Windows 95 can defeated by pressing and holding the shift key while
inserting a CD) 

** America Online **

Did you know that by default, informative mailings, such as this one,
are automatically blocked by America Online due to the volume of its 
subscribers? Did you also know that those "popup" ads when you first 
log onto AOL are turned ON by default? Its your money, and your 
choice. To continue receiving free informative mailings, go to keyword 
PREFERRED MAIL and check the box. This does not automatically sign you
up to ANY mailing lists, but allows you to receive them if sent. You 
can also turn off those popup ads by going to keyword MARKETING PREFS
and select the article entitled "Tell us what your popup preferences 
are". It is from that screen you can block those unsolicited ads.
