Announcement: 1st virtual conference in cell biology

ANNOUNCEMENT: FIRST ELECTRONIC CELL BIOLOGY CONFERENCE
******************************************************

     The First Electronic Cell Biology Conference (ECB-1) will be held
on the Internet and World Wide Web (http://www.vei.co.uk/ecb1/) from
November 3 - 14, 1997. ECB-1 will be a fully international event open
to all members of the scientific community and will cover current
topics related to Cell Biology.

The conference subject areas will include:

* Advances in Cytoskeleton Research,
* The role of Cadherin in Cell Adhesion,
* Extracellular Matrix Proteins and their Receptors,
* Cell Culture Systems in in vitro Toxicology,
* Cell Motility,
* Somatic Mutation and Cancer,
* Comparative Microscopy of Cell Structure and Function,
* Insulin and Signal Transduction,
* Photosynthesis and Pigment Biosynthesis and Degradation under
Control and Stress conditions,
* Protein kinase C in early development,
* Microtubule-microfilament interactions in Cell Motility,
* Intracellular protein translocation,
* Apoptosis,
* Telomeres,
* p53 Growth Regulation,
* Cell Adhesion,
* Cellular Mechanisms of Development,
* The Role of Chaperonins in Protein Folding,
* Endocytosis and Molecular Sorting,
* Transcriptional Regulation in Yeasts,
* Cytokine Receptors and Signal Transduction.

  Authors can opt to have their presentation in the following
categories: 

* non-permanent WWW presentation of a conference poster.
* non-permanent WWW presentation of a conference lecture. 
* refereed WWW presentation which will be considered for print
publication.
* refereed WWW presentation which will be considered for permanent
electronic publication.
  
     Presentations of papers or posters must be prepared in Hypertext
Markup Language (HTML) with figures in GIF or other Web-compatible
formats so that participants can view the papers via the World Wide
Web (The presentations may also include enhancements such as 3D
structures, VRML, Java, RealAudio, Quicktime movies etc.) Powerpoint
presentations can be used for the presentation of conference lectures.
Aid and consultation is provided to participants who may address their
queries to the conference hot-line at cborg at vei.co.uk. Further details

     During the conference interaction, presentations and discussions
will take place via the Internet using a Java-based virtual conference
centre, WWW-based discussion forums and an electronic mailing list.
Before the conference, a timetable for lectures and discussion
sessions for each section will be posted. 

     The Conference will feature a Virtual Exhibition where exhibitors
will be able to describe the activities of their organisation, display
their products and services and interact with registrants. Potential
exhibitors should contact the conference organisers at

2) Registration

If you intend to participate in ECB-1 please use the special
registration form accessible via http://www.vei.co.uk/ecb1/.  The
electronic registration will be used to construct a registrant
database for the conference which will generate the conference mailing
list and handle assignment of userids and passwords.

In addition it is necessary to support the conference via a
registration fee.
The conference fee will be 52.88 pounds sterling inclusive of VAT for
registrants within the European Union(45 UK pounds/75 US dollars for
non-EU registrants) with a special rate for students of 35.25 pounds
sterling inclusive of VAT for registrants within the EU (30 UK
pounds/50 US dollars for non-EU registrants ). A copy of a suitable
student identification should be sent to EAC-1 Registration, VEI,
Oxford Centre for Innovation, Mill St, Oxford, OX2 0JX, UK.

Registration payments can be accepted by credit card, direct bank
transfer, cheque or bank draft.

Acknowledgement of Registration and Payment:

When you first register at the conference site you should receive an
acknowledgement email with a password and userid.

After receipt of your registration fee you will receive a further
acknowledgement and your userid and password will be validated to
allow access to the conference site (when it opens).

Academic registrants from economically-disadvantaged countries can
write to ECB-1 Registration at VEI requesting an exemption to the
registration fee. Exemptions will be made on a discretionary basis
taking into account the reasons given for the request and will be
dependent on suitable funds being available. We will consider
economically disadvantaged countries to include those of Eastern
Europe, Africa, Central and South America, Indian sub-continent, etc. 


3) DEADLINE for receipt of ABSTRACT.  

The deadline for receipt of presentation abstracts is October 10.
Email your abstract directly to ecb1abstracts at vei.co.uk. Fuller
details of the scope of each section is given in the authors' guide
accessible via http://www.vei.co.uk/ecb1/

Your abstract should be no longer than 300 words. And remember to
state which category of presentation (non-permanent poster or lecture,
refereed as full paper) you wish.

4) DEADLINE for receipt of PRESENTATION

The deadline for receipt of papers and posters is Oct 20.  You must
deposit your text and graphics files at the conference ftp site
following the instructions available at http://www.vei.co.uk/ecb1/.
You may also supply a URL from which you are serving your presentation
from your own site. However deposit at the conference site will be
required to take advantage of full mirroring, indexing in the
conference search engine, participation in online lectures and
password protection.


5) Refereeing Period

The refereeing period will commence upon completion of the conference.
If you have a presentation at ECB-1 you may be requested to contribute
a refereeing evaluation on another conference presentation.  Referee
reports will be due December 15.
