Mule Genetics Explanation Please

I cannot find the answer to this question in any genetics book, so I
perhaps people out there can help.

If you mate a Donkey + Horse = Mule. What is the chromosomal makeup of a
donkey and a horse? Does one have more than the other? If so, what
happens to that extra chromosome(s)?

If anyone can point me to a simple reference to answer these questions,
I would greatly appreciate it.
