Req: What to read after _The Eighth Day of Creation_

I've just finished reading _The Eighth Day of Creation_, an excellent
book tracing the discovery of the structure of DNA, the cracking of
the genetic code and the structure of hemoglobin. Trouble is, the
account ends in the mid 70's.

I would be grateful for any suggestions for books to read to bring me
more up to date. In particular, I'm looking for something at about the
same level of detail - pretty in-depth, but carefully explained for
the layman.
