Why stomach growling?

Folks:

I am using a local newsgroup to have my intro biology class pose or
answer thoughtful questions.  One of my students asked about stomach
growling and I remember hearing some explanations once and I think the
reasons were interesting. However, it was awhile back and I forgot the
explanations.  Can someone help me?
