Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is an
independent, nonprofit, applied engineering and
physical sciences research and development
organization dedicated to technology development
and transfer.  SwRI occupies 1,200 acres in San
Antonio, Texas. Approximately 2,700 employees
work in more than 1.7 million square feet of
laboratories, offices, and workshops. Program
development offices are located in Houston,
Detroit, and Washington, D.C. Research volume in
1998 reached $300 million.  Net income is applied
to Institute-sponsored research, advanced

following Research Scientist/ Senior Research
Scientist full time, permanent position available.
	You will plan, perform, conduct and
promote R & D in the areas of biomaterials and
polymer chemistry by performing duties
independently and as part of a team. You will
develop, execute, present and promote new and
existing projects in the biomaterials and polymer
chemistry fields.  You are required to travel 10-
20% of the time.  Your superior problem-solving
and leadership skills will be used to manage
personal research projects and phases of other
projects.  In addition, you will plan and oversee
experiments and materials characterization while
working in the materials chemistry and materials
processing laboratories.  Other responsibilities
include communicating with clients and
subcontractors within and outside the
organization.  You will also have the opportunity
to work with personnel throughout the Institute
on interdisciplinary projects.
     The position requires that you have
excellent oral communication skills to present
and interact effectively with clients and co-
workers. Your outstanding written skills will be
put to use when writing proposals and technical
     This exciting opportunity exists for a
chemist or materials scientist with expertise in
polymer chemistry and biomaterials.  The best
candidate must have hands-on experience in
synthesis, processing, and characterization in
polymer chemistry and must be familiar with
biomaterials.  Your experience in chromatography
(HPLC, GC, GC/MS, GPC), spectroscopy (FTIR,
Raman, NMR, UV/Vis), and microscopy (light, SEM,
TEM) will be a great benefit when characterizing
materials. General knowledge in biology and
toxicology is a plus.

Education level required:
M.S. or Ph.D. in chemistry or materials science
with an emphasis in polymer chemistry and/or
biomaterials is required for this position.
