First Announcement


    THE PACIFIC RIM CONFERENCE ON BIOTECHNOLOGY OF
                BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS
                          AND
             ITS IMPACT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

                 October 17 - 21, 1994


In order to promote the use of BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS (B.t.)-based
insecticides in the Pacific rim region, the conference is being
organized by a group of scientists from the universities, government
institutions, and B.t. industries from Taiwan, Japan, and the U.S.A.

The conference will be held in the Academic Activity Center, Academia
Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, which can accommodate around 200 participants.
In addition to the speakers from the U.S.A. and Canada, the conference
organizers plan to invite as many speakers as possible from the Asia-
Pacific area.

The goals of the conference are:
 * To promote the biotechnolgy of B.t. for the agricultural industry;
   to exchange the latest information on strain isolation and
   identification; to review the current topics on the molecular
   biology of the insecticidal proteins, transgenic plants, resistance
   management and field application of B.t. products in the Asian
   Pacific environment.
 * To promote collaboration among scientists working on B.t. in the
   Pacific rim region.


         Planned Topics of the Conference

- New strains/genes discovery

- Structural and function relationship of B.t. insecticidal proteins
  at the molecular level

- Registration and application of recombinant B.t. products

- Resistance management

- Impact to the environment

                      Registration

If you are interested in participating in this Conference, please
complete and return the enclosed form before March 1994. The
participants will then receive the Second Announcement in March 1994,
consisting of the final registration form, summary of the scientific
programme and a list of hotels in Taipei and the residence hall in
Academia Sinica. The deadline for submitting abstracts for oral
presentations and posters is July 1, 1994.
