"WOMEN DO MATH & SCIENCE"
The 1994 PEI Women Do Math & Science Project is bigger than ever! In its
fourth successful year, it has grown to a two-phase project.
* Phase I: Keynote Event on Friday, May 27, 1994, for 2000 grade 8 girls
and boys.
* Phase II: Mentoring Project, running from June to September, for 300
grade 8 girls.
Phase I takes place at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Carol Gold,
Science Communicator for the Ontario Science Centre, is the Keynote
Speaker. Her presentation will be followed by a live theatrical performance.
Phase II takes place throughout the summer, and will involve 300 girls
going on-site for mentoring experiences in math, science, and
technology-related fields. Island Mentor Sponsors include: CBC, Island
Tel, UPEI, Holland College, Marine Atlantic, the Food Technology Centre
and Maritime Electric.
The main goal of this project is to ensure that the grade 8 girls of this
province continue to benefit from consistent and strong community
support. This support can encourage them to pursue math and science,
especially as they begin to choose their subjects for junior and senior
high and, eventually their careers. Not only will grade 8 girls be
positively affected by this project, their friends, parents, teachers,
and communities benefit as well.
