STATISTICS FOR BIOLOGISTS SOFTWARE FORUM
Monday 26 June 1995, 10.30 - 16.00
Life Sciences Building, Crown Street, University of Liverpool
Hosted by CTI Biology
There is now a new generation of software tools which make it relatively
easy to put attractive tests, images and dynamic graphics on computer
screen. Examples of authoring tools include: Hypercard, ToolBook and
Metacard for Apple Macintosh, PC and X-Windows machines respectively. Two
of the TLTP (Teaching and Learning Technology Programme) projects, STEPS
and QUERCUS have been developing materials of this kind for teaching and
learning statistics for biologists. The aim of this meeting is to allow
members of the above projects to describe their aims, progress and
experiences and to allow participants to try out this software for
themselves.
The presenters will include:
- From the STEPS Consortium - Steve Gilmour, University of Reading -
The STEPS Project is developing computer-based teaching and learning
materials in the form of practical problems for student investigation. The
contexts of the problems involve a number of disciplines including biology.
The intended use of the material is not to replace lectures but to
reinforce learning and provide a supportive environment within which
students can explore practical issues and begin to appreciate the role of
statistical tools in their own discipline. The biology material is being
produced by STEPS consortium members involving the universities of Glasgow,
Leeds and Reading.
- From the QUERCUS Consortium - Chris Robertson -
QUERCUS is a suite of interactive tutorial software designed to tutor
bioscience students in the basic techniques of statistical analysis and
report writing. It focuses on creating a series of tools to enhance the
teaching and learning of statistics and modelling. It is envisaged that
this will lead to substantial saving in staff time. QUERCUS is produced by
a consortium consisting of Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Sterling and Heriot-Watt
Universities.
