Announcing a symposium and extending a Call for Papers on:

THE CONSEQUENCES AND MANAGEMENT OF FISHERIES BY-CATCH

The Marine Fisheries Section of the American Fisheries Society (AFS)
will submit a two-day symposium on the Consequences and Management of
Fisheries By-Catch for inclusion in the AFS 1996 Annual Meeting. The AFS
meeting will be held in Detroit during late August or early September
1996. Concern about the commercial and recreational fisheries by-catch of
fish, crustaceans, mammals, and turtles continues to escalate. More
selective fishing technologies and approaches to management of population
by-catch, critical habitat, and endangered species are emerging. Yet, the
population and ecosystem-level consequences for target and by-catch
species and the socioeconomic consequences of reducing the by-catch remain
unclear. The symposium program will consist of invited and contributed
presentations and working group sessions. A symposium proceedings will
include presentations and summaries of working group sessions. Contributed
papers are hereby requested on, but not limited to, the following:

POPULATION/ECOSYSTEM IMPLICATIONS OF FISHERIES BY-CATCH
*	Characterization of by-catch
*	Estimating mortality of discards and by-catch sea sampling
*	Population and ecosystem implications and modeling

MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
*	Current methods and emerging approaches
*	Agency and interest group perspectives

Abstracts are to be no longer than 200 words and should include an
objective, a statement of findings, and key conclusions.
