International Symposium on Spongiform Encephalopathies:
Generating Rational Policy in the Face of Public Fears
at Georgetown University =80 December 12-13, 1996
organized by The Ceres Forum of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy=20
at Georgetown University and the American Association of Veterinary=20
Medical Colleges
Purpose of the Symposium
We must act proactively to assure food safety and maintain consumer=20
confidence. What have we learned that will help us avert future crises? =
=20
This symposium will assemble scientists at the forefront of research on=20
spongiform encephalopathies to communicate with the legislators and=20
regulators whose responsibility it is to shape and enforce government=20
policies to protect the public. The poster session will provide all=20
with a greater understanding of the state-of-the-science upon which=20
rational, effective policies must be based.
Poster Topics (to be presented on a 4x4 foot poster board)
1. Etiology and pathology of spongiform encephalopathies
2. Transmissibility and epidemiology
3. Animal husbandry practices and the rendering industry
4. Detection and diagnosis
5. Assurance of public health; emergency response measures
6. Economic and trade issues
7. Societal issues and communication
8. Other
Application Instructions
1. Prepare an abstract (200-word maximum) of your poster. First lines=20
should include title, full names and institutional affiliations of=20
authors (your name first).
2. Several lines below the abstract, list the topic of your poster from=20
the list above, your title and position, complete address, phone, fax,=20
and email.
3. By September 1, 1996
