                   V INTERNATIONAL AND VII NATIONAL CONGRESS ON=20
                       "KNOWLEGE AND UTILIZATION OF NOPAL"
INVITATION
The National Council for Science and Technology (Mexico) and The School of
Agronomy of the Universidad Aut=F3noma de Nuevo Le=F3n, invite researchers,
producers, entrepreneurs, students, and all those interested to the VII
National and V International Congress on Knowledge and Utilization of Nopal.
This event will take place from the 15th to the 19th of September 1997 in
Monterrey, Nuevo Le=F3n, M=E9xico.

CONFERENCES
The most recent developments on the knowledge and utilization of Nopal will
be presented by prominent scientist invited from the scientific community of
M=E9xico and the rest of the world (Please consult the list of the confirmed
speakers on our web site:

PRESENTATIONS
In addition of the invited speakers, you can present the advances of your
work either as an oral presentation or as a cartel. The subjects considered
include:
1. Morphology, taxonomy y biosistematics
2. Ecophysiology y fitogeography
3. Cropping and sustainability
4. Breeding and biotechnology
5. Etnobotany and biomedical research
6. Cochineal husbandry
7. Phytopathology and entomology
8. Marketing and industrialization
9. The nopal as a forage crop
10. Other cactacea of economic importance

The organizing committee will evaluate each proposal. The result of the
evaluation will be communicated on August 1, 1997. Only those works
fulfilling the requirements established in the Pre-registration and
Registration forms will be published in the memory of the congress. The
deadline to submit manuscripts is July 10, 1997.

Instructions for Abstracts
These instructions are valid either for oral as for cartel presentations.
The author(s) is/are responsible for the content.

Length: Two letter size single spaced pages=20

Font:   Prestige elite or Times Roman size 11.

Format: Based on the sample sheet and the example provided.=20

Title:  Capital letters, bold type, and centered.

Author(s) name(s: Start one line below the title using capital and lower
case letters and centered.  Include the complete name of each author
starting with surnames. Establish the position and institution for each
author and address of the main author using

Footnotes: (called using consecutive numbers as superindexes).

Content: Include chapters: Introduction, Methods and Materials, Results,
Discussion, Conclusions, and Bibliography. Chapter titles must be centered
in bold type and using capital and lower case letters.

Instructions for Presentations
Oral: Maximum of 20 minutes for your presentation and  5 minutes for=
 questions.
We strongly recommend to use 35 mm slides; however, overhead projectors will
also be available. Identify each slide with a number, your name and a mark
to be placed in the right position on the projector.

Cartel: The maximum dimensions are 1.10 x 0.70 m.
The title must be in capital letters, centered, in bold, and with a letter
size of 2 cm.
Author(s) name(s) must start one line below the title using capital and
lower case letters and centered.  Include the complete name of each author
starting with surnames. Establish the position and institution for each
author and address of the main author using footnotes (called using
consecutive numbers as superindexes). Use a font size of 1 cm.
Chapter titles must be centered in bold type and using capital and lower
case letters. Font size must be of 0.5 cm height. Text inside each chapter
must be of the same size as that of the chapter title, in normal font (no=
 bold).
The order inside the cartel must be from left to right, and from top to=
 bottom.

COURSES AND WORKSHOPS
These will take place on the period from the 16th to the 18th of September.
To run these activities a minimum registration of 10 people will be=
 required.

Courses:
Planting and growing of nopal
Cochineal husbandry
Post-harvest management
Propagation of nopal using micro-tunnels

Workshops:
Taxonomy and morphology.
Dyed of natural fibers using Cochineal.
"Tuna" cheese elaboration
Instrumentation for research with Nopal

COMPETITIONS
Three competitions will be celebrated during the congress:
Thesis (nopal, cochineal, tuna and pitayo), Cooking (nopal and tuna or
pear), Cartel (nopal and tuna or pear). You can obtain the bases for each
competition from the organizing committee.

EXPOSITION
There will be areas for exhibiting products, equipment, books, etc. related
with the subject of the congress.
This exhibition will be located in the main area of the congress. People and
institutions interested in exhibiting their products might contact the
organizing committee.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
Meeting of the Latin-American Society of Cact=E1ceas and Succulents (Event=
 to
be confirmed).
Workshop of the Nopal Network
Meeting of the Nopal Product System
Nopal Fair: Exposition and marketing of products and sub-products of Nopal.
Program for companions: A program including visits to landmarks, museums,
historical places, and handicrafts of the state of Nuevo Le=F3n is being=
 prepared.
Cultural Events: Paints and photographs on the topic of Nopal will be
exhibited during the congress. Additionally, a program about National and
Regional folklore is being prepared.

FEES
Congress
Professional $ 50 u.s.d. before June 10, 1997 or $ 60 u.s.d. afterwards
Students     $ 25 u.s.d. before June 10, 1997 or $ 35 u.s.d. afterwards

Courses and Workshops
These will have a fee of $25 u.s.d. each. IMPORTANT: This fee is included in
the congress registration fee.

Exhibition
Each stand (2X3 m) will have a cost of $250 u.s.d. for the period of the
congress.
