A new course, Arctic Field Ecology, will be offered by the University of
Minnesota-Itasca Field Biology Program. The four-week, six-credit course
takes place along the rivers of Canada's Northwest Territories. The focus
of the course is on learning field techniques useful to ecological
research, on research design related to current questions in Arctic
ecology, and on writing research proposals. The course gives students a
firm background in past and current Arctic ecological research,
involvement in ongoing landscape ecology studies, and a good overview of
Arctic natural history. Students camp at a variety sites, and travel
through the remote region by inflatable canoe.
