Diabetes Care Research Award Announcement
____________________________________________________________________________

Boehringer Mannheim and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International
(JDFI)
today presented the $100,000 Boehringer Mannheim/JDFI Diabetes Care
Research
Award to two U.S. researchers during the closing ceremonies of the
International
Diabetes Federation Congress. The award was presented to Mike Mueckler,
Ph.D.,
Washington University, and Gerald I. Shulman, M.D., Ph.D., Yale
University.

Drs. Mueckler and Shulman have shed light on two important biological
functions
related to diabetes: glucose transport and glucose metabolism. Dr.
Mueckler
pioneered the identification and characterization of glucose transporter
genes
that are critical for the regulation of blood sugar levels. Dr. Shulman
has
used nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to make the first real-time
measurements of glycogen synthesis and its intermediate steps in human
skeletal
muscle in response to insulin.

Each year, award winners are selected by a panel of ten international
diabetes
thought leaders. Other distinguished researchers honored during the
3-year
history of the Diabetes Care Research Award include: John Todd, Ph. D.,
principal research fellow for the Wellcome Trust in Oxford, England;
and
Morris F. White, M.D., and Steven E. Shoelson, M.D., Ph.D., from the
Joslin
Diabetes Center in Boston.

Currently, nominations are being accepted for the 1998 Boehringer
Mannheim/
JDFI Diabetes Care Research Award for researchers under the age of 45
whose
work is better defining how diabetes and its complications can be
prevented,
detected, treated and cured. For additional information and the 1998
nomination packet, interested diabetes specialists and researchers
