Workshop Announcement
REPORTER GENES IN PLANTS
18 - 19 March 1999
King's Manor, University of York, UK
Reporter genes represent a powerful tool which can be used to investigate cellular processes in
plant cells. For example, reporter-promoter fusions have greatly advanced the study of plant
gene promoters, relating both quantitative and qualitative information. Investigations of gene
expression, such as developmental or environmental regulation are enhanced by the use of
reporter genes which are substituted for the coding sequence of the gene of interest. Other
examples of the use of reporter genes include screening of mutants and transgenic plants and
the use of fluorescent indicator proteins which relate temporal and spatial information about
cell signalling molecules and aspects of protein interactions in living cells.
The choice of reporter gene is dependent on the given experiment; the toxicity, targetting, and
assay of the reporter protein are all important considerations. The use and applications of
reporter genes in plants are constantly developing, with the creation of new bifunctional
reporters in which advantages of different reporter proteins are combined and the
introduction of new products, instrumentation and software. This workshop seeks to
highlight the technical advances in the use of reporter genes in recent years, and will
specifically consider the use of ß-glucuronidase (GUS), luciferase (luc), green fluorescent
protein (GFP), and aequorin.
Presentations by keynote speakers will be combined with offered papers, discussion sessions
on the choice of reporter genes, products and instrumentation and a poster session.
