The BIOSCI / Bionet electronic forum for biology news and discussion
are at their 20th year anniversary (via Usenet, a bit longer for the
e-mail bulletin board at Stanford's Intelligenetics).
In honor of this milestone, I'll post a few messages from
Bionet 20 years ago, thanks to Usenet archives kept by
Henry Spencer at the University of Toronto, Department of Zoology,
thru the 1980s and 1990s, now available at Google.com.
Sunil Maulik is one of the pioneers of bioinformatics
who helped create Bionet as an active venue for biology
community discussions.

The next few messages posted to the RESEARCH-NEWS Bulletin Board (BBoard),
describe attempts by BIONET together with subscribers to the BIONET BBoards to
initiate, via electronic mail, an "On-Line" Conference or Discussion. The
subject of this discussion has been chosen as "Computer Applications in the
Sequencing of Large Genomes" (CSLG). The first two messages introduce some of
the contributors, and the next few include their commentary on this subject.
Finally, questions raised by the contributors are posted for discussion.
BIONET strongly encourages readers of this BBoard to post their own comments,
suggestions, criticisms, or questions by mailing to RESEARCH-NEWS(@BIONET-20
.ARPA). Those actively involved in this area, either in software development,
database management, or in sequencing and analyzing genomes, are particularly
encouraged to respond.
If you would like to add an extended commentary, please mail it, along with
a biographical note, to MAULIK(@BIONET-20.ARPA). I will reformat it and re-mail
it to the BBoard. If you would simply like to respond to the on-going
commentary and questions, simply mail directly to RESEARCH-NEWS. I would also
encourage all contributors to monitor progress on this BBoard and to
answer/extend any responses that arise.
Sincerely,
Sunil Maulik ARPAnet: Mau... from bionet-20.arpa
