Just a hunch this, but does anyone know whether lactones are used in primary metabolism or are they only secondary metabolites (where they are widespread)? Raises some interesting evolutionary questions if so,, and I can't immediately think of any PRIMARY metabolites that are lactones. Help appreciated! Douglas.
