PhD Scholarship on the Biochemistry/Physiology of Metabolic Depression.
Applications are invited for a full-time PhD scholarship for a project
associated with current research into metabolic depression. The project
currently makes use of desert frogs and the European snail as animal
models. The candidate would be co-supervised by A/Prof Michael Guppy
(comparative biochemist in the Biochemistry Department) and A/Prof Philip
Withers (comparative physiologist in the Zoology Department). Possible
avenues of investigation would involve determining the allometry of
minimum metabolic rate, designing experiments to determine the
contributions of intrinsic factors, and extrinsic factors (e.g. pH, pCO2
and pO2) in effecting metabolic depression, quantifying the role of
significant energy-consuming processes in metabolic depression, and
determining how these processes are modulated and regulated during
metabolic depression.
Remuneration: $20,000 per year plus air fare to Perth.
NOTE: Non-residents of Australia or New Zealand would be subject to
overseas student fees.
