Dear Colleagues
THIS ANNOUNCEMENT CONTAINS URGENT INFORMATION
ABOUT AN END OF JANUARY DEADLINE FOR PUBLICATION
OF CONFERENCE PAPERS.
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT AND INVITATION TO THE
4TH FATTY ACID OXIDATION & KETOGENESIS CONFERENCE
Sorry for the delay since the first announcment, this has been due to
unexpected illness. As time is creeping up on us, your early replies
would be very much appreciated.
DATE & VENUE
The 4th FAOx&K Conference will be held from Friday, 3rd April to
Monday, 6th April 1998 inclusive, at the Institute of Child Health &
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, University
College London Medical School in central London, in the newly
completed Conference Suite which has excellent facilities.
We plan to start the programme Friday afternoon and finish Monday
lunchtime, i.e. 3 full days of lectures etc.
IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO RECEIVE FURTHER INFORMATION
BY E-MAIL, PLEASE REPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO THIS
MESSAGE SO THAT YOUR NAME CAN BE SPEEDILY
REMOVED FROM THE LIST!
PROGRAMME
As previously we hope to include as many speakers as possible
(especially postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers) and would
welcome suggestions for particular topics and/or new names to include
in our mailing list. Again we plan to foster informal discussion
sessions and brief oral presentations of posters. WWW information will
be updated at:
http://www.ich.ucl.ac.uk/units/faoxk.htm
PUBLICATION OF PROCEEDINGS
We fully intend to publish next year's papers as a book very
soon after the Conference despite the failed previous attempt
to publish the proceedings of the 2nd Conference. We have negiotated
with different publishers and intend to publish the Proceedings as a
volume with Plenum Press. We have not a formal contract yet with
Plenum Press and in order to do this we need an idea of length of
book, names, numbers and titles for contributions. At present we
intend to aim for around 500 pages. If we place a bulk order before
publication, this would mean the cost per copy would be around
40 pounds sterling (depending on numbers, length etc). We envisage
two types of contribution: longer articles and brief (~ 2 page)
communications. The type and content will be peer reviewed.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT AND PUBLISH YOUR
WORK IN THE PROCEEDINGS WE NEED TO KNOW BY
THE END OF JANUARY.
THEREFORE, WOULD POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTORS PLEASE
GIVE US THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE:
NAME(S) OF AUTHOR(S)
TENTATIVE TITLE
A SHORT (ONE OR TWO SENTENCES) DESCRIPTION OF THE INTENDED
MANUSCRIPT. This is NOT an abstract at this stage, it is only
so that we can assess the subject and nature of the contribution.
OUR ABSOLUTE DEADLINE FOR DRAWING UP A CONTRACT
WITH PLENUM PRESS IS AT THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY
SO WE NEED THIS INFORMATION BY FEBRUARY 3RD, THE
DEADLINE FOR EARLY REGISTRATION FEES (SEE BELOW).
This is very important so that we can get a formal contract with the
publishers and not let down the contributors, as happened last time,
by the publisher withdrawing. WE SHALL NOT REQUEST
MANUSCRIPTS UNTIL AFTER WE HAVE RECEIVED AND
SIGNED A FORMAL BINDING CONTRACT WITH THE PRESS.
REGISTRATION FEE
The Fatty Acid Oxidation and Ketogenesis Conferences are
organised purely by us and not by an external conference centre. We
believe the costs are very low compared to many other conferences
AS THEY ARE ONLY DESIGNED TO COVER THE COST OF FOOD AND
MATERIALS. We also encourage everyone to contribute and so we
are therefore unable to offer free registration to speakers, etc.
Because we were in debt (=A31,000) last time it will be necessary to
increase the cost of registration for the Meeting. This time we have
decided to charge =A3125 (or a reduced rate of =A380 for students
postdoctoral workers under 27 years old) before 3rd February, 1998
increasing to =A3150 (or student fee of =A3100) after that date. This fee
will cover the cost of registration, conference materials (including
Abstracts/Programme etc.), lunches, dinners (including the Conference
Dinner), farewell buffet and coffees & teas. Similarly, for
accompanying persons, the fee will be =A380 (=A3100 after 3rd Feb), which
includes all meals and tourist information. Breakfasts and
accommodation are NOT covered by the conference fee and it does NOT
include the cost of published proceedings as we are not able to budget
for this at the moment. This time we would like to request that all
delegates try to pay their fees directly into the dedicated bank
account AND THAT THEY COVER THE COST OF TRANSFER FEES
ETC. AS LAST TIME THE CONSIDERABLE EXCESSES WERE
COVERED ENTIRELY BY PATTI:
"Dr P.A. Quant, Conference Account"
Account Number 00-29037751, Sort Code 52-41-19
National Westminster Bank
Woolpack Chambers
16 Market Street
Ely
Cambridgeshire
CB7 4LS
United Kingdom.
Payments should be made by Bankers Draft payable to the above account
and sent to Dr Patti A. Quant, or by Direct Bank to Bank Transfer and
should INCLUDE the cost of commission and/or bank charges.
IF YOU ARE PAYING BY DIRECT TRANSFER IT IS VERY
IMPORTANT TO SEND US A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR BANK
TRANSFER WITH YOUR NAME, ADDRESS ETC.
If you do not do this then money will appear in the Conference
Account but we will not know who has sent it!
ACCOMMODATION
We shall be happy, once again, to assist with finding appropriate
accommodation (1* to 4* hotels, Guest Houses or Bed & Breakfast)
within 10 minutes walk of the conference venue for all the delegates
who would like us to do so. We shall be negotiating with the
University of London for student rooms which is by no means guaranteed
and, therefore, we would appreciate an early indication of interest
from those who would prefer student rooms.
SOCIAL PROGRAMME
We shall be trying to design a more ambitious social programme for
this Meeting ...........and so if you have always wanted to take part
in a Mitochondria v Peroxisomes Football Match this might be your
chance!!!
IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO RECEIVE FURTHER INFORMATION BY E-MAIL, PLEASE
REPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO THIS MESSAGE SO THAT YOUR NAME CAN BE
SPEEDILY REMOVED FROM THE LIST!
