I spoke privately but suppose this merits a public comment.

I'm opposed to moderation for all of the reasons Herbert suggested. My
delete key and quick skimming work fine. I rarely read past the subject
line --- I find I can spot these messages swiftly. I haven't found it
oppressive, even though I subscribe to several lists and see the same ones
multiple times.

A related aspect is the extent to which spamming wastes bandwidth. It
does, of course, by our lights, but to a commercially inclined person
this is an appropriate use. I suspect moderation in this group would
have only a negligible impact on bandwidth because of its size.

I tend to read the list, more than comment, because I'm interested in
learning about BTK. [My inclinations are more with I think Paul's, who said
the other day that he was finding more fully dynamical treatments more
useful. I apologize if I have garbled the statement, my memory for the
phrasing and attribution are imperfect.] Thus I suppose I could be
considered a less-than-full participant, and those who wish will scale my
remarks accordingly.
