Probably this is as good an excuse as any to remind readers of this news
group that a lack of knowledge of the literature can be avoided. I am
trying to keep my list of metabolic control analysis references
(http://ir2lcb.cnrs-mrs.fr/lcbpage/athel/mcarefs.htm) up to date, and as
a guide to what has been added most recently I have started a separate
list (http://ir2lcb.cnrs-mrs.fr/lcbpage/athel/mcrefnew.htm) with entries
listed in reverse order of the date of addition (i.e. most recent first
in the list). At moment it just has one entry, but this will change,
especially if people tell me when they publish new stuff on metabolic
control analysis (preferably with a full reference by email so that I
don't have to retype anything).
Returning to Douglas's point, it is indeed interesting. I knew about
JBS's father, but had forgotten about his grandfather. I say forgotten
rather than didn't know in the first place because he's probably
mentioned in Ronald Clarke's biography of around 20 years ago (called
"JBS" if I remember rightly). It's a good read, because JBS Haldane was
a much larger than life character, who not only made major contributions
to biochemistry, genetics, physiology, statistics and doubtless other
things I've forgotten about, but also found time to write a huge number
of popular articles. Hobnobbing with generals in the morning to advise
them on the UK's defences during the War, going to court in the
afternoon to try to persuade them not to shut down his newspaper (the
Daily Worker) as a security risk.
