PROJECT:
"Regulation of Maize Provitamin A Carotenoid Biosynthesis."
Carotenoids, derived from plant food sources, are converted in humans to
vitamin A and other important compounds needed for growth and
development. About 250 million children worldwide suffer from vitamin A
deficiency that is associated with consumption of foods low in
provitamin A carotenoids. Endosperms of food crops, such as maize and
wheat, are low in carotenoid content, and are especially low in
provitamin A as compared with nonprovitamin A carotenoids; rice
endosperms are completely deficient in carotenoids of any sort. One
approach to alleviating Vitamin A deficiency worldwide is to improve
levels of provitamin A carotenoids in food staples through metabolic
engineering of the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway. The current study of
gene expression as related to carotenoid accumulation in maize endosperm
will lead to metabolic engineering of the endosperm carotenoid
biosynthetic pathway which occurs in endosperm plastids. This project is
funded by The National Institutes of Health.
