In preparation for the forthcoming NATO Workshop at Visegrad
(http://ir2lcb.cnrs-mrs.fr/~athel/meet99.htm), Douglas Kell and Pedro
Mendes have written a discussion paper with the above title, raising some
of the issues that they think it will be important to discuss during the
Workshop. This is now available for examination at their web site, at
http://gepasi.dbs.aber.ac.uk/dbk/mca99bio.htm.
Not all of the opinions they express are likely to please everyone. For
example,
"Simplified ('top-down') methods in which the system structure is assumed a
priori will not work for complex systems..."
"No example exists in which one can extrapolate the conventional control
coefficients to provide reliable predictions..."
etc.
All participants in the Workshop are being invited to participate in the
discussion initiated by Douglas and Pedro, by there is no reason why the
discussion should be limited to them, especially as many of the points they
raise have very broad implications for the future practice of metabolic
control analysis. If readers of this news group like to send comments
either to the news group or to me, we can consider later whether it would
be appropriate to find a way to include such contributions to the
discussion in the published Proceedings.
