question on metabolic networks

Hi everyone,

I don't know how much my questions will fit in,
but it involves metabolism and i would really
appreciate an answer.
There are two questions:
First, Who knows about research on differences in
metabolism for different states of a cell?
For an example imagine a bacterial cell, like E.
coli, whose metabolism changes qualitatively with
their phase of growth (lag -phase, exponential
growth and so on = different states).
Specialized cells could be interpreted as
different states of an common ancestor cell too.
Furthermore i would guess that even in one cell
different functional states exist, which can be
activated and switched. So for large models which
include both regulation and metabolism these
different states could become interesting.

My second question is motivated by the recent
discussion on metabolic networks (qualitative
simulations) and more precise stochastic
simulations.
Are their parts in metabolic networks which
behave nearly independend or are regulated
seperately?
I just thought about reducing the degrees of
freedom for a better understanding of the system
under study.
Thanks Michael Rempel
