I enclose details of our Emerging Biotechnology Players Report.

Since its birth in the early 1970's, the biotechnology industry has grown significantly to include more than 4,000 firms in 25 mainly western nations, developed more than 300 products in 200 indications and achieved 2001 revenues of approximately $27.6 billion.

Despite the growth in product approvals, business formation, employment and capital investment, biotechnology is facing significant challenges.

2001 was not a good year, with the industry rising by only one-third of what it had achieved in 2000. Furthermore, the IPO market that fuelled the 1998-2000 biotech boom has all but disappeared.

How will this research driven business evolve over the next five years?

What will be the contribution of the new players to the sectors' quest for innovation and increasing productivity?

Scope and Coverage of this report:

- Benchmarking of the top-ten players in the biotechnology industry by 2001 sales, operating profits and R&D spend followed by forecast revenues of the leading products, players, technologies and therapy areas between 2002-07

- Benchmarking of 12 key emerging players in the biotechnology industry by 2001 sales, operating profits/loss and R&D spend followed by forecast revenues of the leading products, players, technologies and therapy areas, between 2002-07

- Full profiles of the 12 key emerging companies: Antisoma, British Biotech, Cambridge Antibody Technology, Celera Genomics, Human Genome Sciences, Isis Pharmaceuticals, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, MorphoSys AG, Oxford GlycoSciences, Scios, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and XOMA

- 1, 3 and 5 year forecasts for the key products and total ethical sales for the 12 profiled biotech companies, with forecasts benchmarked against analyst consensus estimates where possible

Key Reasons to Buy This Report:

1. Benchmark your strategy against key rivals in the biotechnology sector
2. Assess the timescale and impact of new biotechnologies on your business
3. Understand the drivers of growth in the global biotechnology industry
4. Assess the importance of consolidation within the biotechnology sector
5. Realize the importance of intrabiotech alliance networks to business model evolution
6. Identify potential partners within the emerging biotech sector to drive your portfolio strategy

“...Small molecules carry the potential over the next ten years to become the dominant technological trajectory in terms of pipeline development eclipsing antibody-based and rDNA technologies. rDNA technologies and the field of big protein development are ageing and return is expected to show signs of decline...” Dr Alex Pavlou, Biotechnology Analyst

In 2001, the 10 biotechnology industry leaders posted an 18% increase in product revenue, to $10,992m. This was mainly driven by Amgen and Genentech, generating $4,482m and $1,736m, respectively.

Therapeutic proteins are likely to maintain the lead, with forecast revenues of $19,053m in 2007. Amgen's Enbrel will be the top biotech blockbuster, with forecast sales of $3,200m in 2007. Second to therapeutic proteins will be antibodies, forecast to generate $7,635m in 2007.

Millennium could replace Celltech in the top 10 biotech firms, with forecast product revenue of $710m in 2007. Over the next five years, Millennium, Scios and Isis will be the three leading emerging players in terms of product sales, with forecast combined revenue of $1,369m.

profitability by 2007?
- Vertex Pharmaceuticals - Will VX-175 win the competition
with Abbott's Kaletra?

ACTION POINTS

- Recognizes a $30bn revenue gap in 2007 between the ten-leading biotech companies and the 12 emerging players profiled within the report. However, the emerging companies are destined to grow at a faster rate over this time period, and their focus should be on reaching sustainable profitability.

- Emerging players should explore new market opportunities in the intracellular environment, protein-protein and gene-protein complex interactions, thus paving the way for a new generation of genomics/proteomics-based small molecule drugs, DNA/RNA and gene-based therapies.

- Two thirds of the leading biotechs' blockbuster 2007 income will be earned by Amgen. Emerging players should take note of Amgen's reformulation strategies in an attempt to optimize revenue potential.

- The degree of supply chain integration and the level of success of intrabiotech acquisitions or alliances will decide the evolution of the emerging business model. The emerging sector should use these wisely to overcome significant challenges related to manufacturing or regulatory complexities.
