new WBG Submission software -- try it out

I have written new software for electronic submission of WBG Abstracts
which is, I think, a great improvement over the old. It is at

		<http://elegans.swmed.edu/wbg/submit/>

I would be very grateful if all of you would submit some test
abstracts (I'll throw them away before the next gazette), try to make
it break, and tell me what you think. Above all, this new system is
supposed to be easy even for new users, so please don't be shy:
have your kids try it when they visit the lab and tell me about
anything they find difficult or anything that didn't work the way you
expected.

In this new system, you write your abstract with your usual word
processor, save it as an HTML file, then upload that file to the
Server (no cutting and pasting). Formatting is preserved, accented
characters are allowed, and you can even submit figures and
supplementary data along with your abstract. There are some
restrictions on the format, and I have provided a template for you to
edit. Eventually I hope to provide an MS-Word template with protected
fields and macros, but for now you have to follow the instructions.

This new system will be available for use by the new WBG deadline. If
it works well, I intend to make it the sole method for electronic
abstract submission in the future. It may even replace paper
submission. If it is easy to submit nicely formatted abstracts, we
can simply print them out for the gazette, and we could eliminate the
current absurd requirement that every abstract be submitted twice,
once on paper and once via the Net. This would be especially
convenient for meetings, since electronic abstracts can be so easily
distributed to organizers and participants.
