Ph.D. Studentship

England (Central London). Post-graduate position in the Biology of Aging in
Invertebrate Model Organisms. Utilizing an integrated research approach,
you will be
characterizing environmental, metabolic and genetic determinants of aging
and longevity
in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and the nematode Caenorhabditis
elegans. This
project will be carried out in the laboratories of Prof. Linda Partridge
(flies; WWW site:
http://www.gene.ucl.ac.uk/flies/partridge.html) and Dr. David Gems (worms; WWW
site: http://www.gene.ucl.ac.uk/nematode). The position is available from
September,
1998.

The Galton Laboratory of the Department of Biology at University College
London,
invites applications from individuals with a good degree in a
biology-related subject, a
good understanding of genetics and evolutionary biology, and an interest in
the biology
of aging and longevity. This position is available to UK citizens and those
fulfilling the
appropriate residence requirements.

The Department of Biology at University College London (UCL) is a strongly
research-oriented department with 38 academic staff, 11 senior research
fellows, 53
research staff and 60 PhD students (see our website at
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/biology for
further information). The Department of Biology was rated 5 (on a scale of
1 - 5) for
research in both the 1992 and 1996 research assessment exercises. The
Department is
also the home department for about 40 more PhD students who are based at
the Imperial
Cancer Research Fund, the National Institute for Medical Research and the
Institute of
Zoology. UCL is located in Bloomsbury in the West End of London, close to
the British
Library, the British Museum, the theatre district and London Zoo.
