A postdoctoral position is available to work on the interaction of the
sugarbeet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii) with Arabidopsis thaliana.
The project initially deals with the characterization of identified A.
thaliana genes that change expression around the infecting nematode. This
gene characterization will use promoter studies, in situ hybridization,
immunolocalization, and experiments targeted to alter expression of the
gene-of-interest. Second, this position will have an increasing genetic
component consisting of the characterization of A. thaliana mutants with
altered susceptibility to the nematode. This genetic aspect will include
preparing and analyzing double mutants for epistasis analyses and mapping of
mutant loci. Applicants should have strong proven records in molecular
biology, genetics, plant physiology, and techniques related to the projects
described above. The annual salary will be $28,000 and the initial
appointment will be for one year with a renewal for additional years
desirable if mutually agreeable. Send your application containing a cover
letter, reprints of relevant publications, your CV, and the contact
addresses and phone numbers of three reference persons to Dr. Thomas Baum;
Iowa State University; Department of Plant Pathology; 351 Bessey Hall; Ames,
IA 50011. More information can be obtained at
