The chemotaxis assay as described by Sam Ward works very well, but there
are other assays that people have worked out described in:

Bargmann CI, Hartwieg E, Horvitz HR. Odorant-selective genes and neurons
mediate olfaction in C. elegans. Cell. 1993 Aug 13;74(3):515-27.

Bargmann CI, Horvitz HR Chemosensory neurons with overlapping functions
direct chemotaxis to multiple chemicals in C. elegans. Neuron 1991
Nov;7(5):729-42

Pierce-Shimomura JT, Morse TM, Lockery The fundamental role of
pirouettes in Caenorhabditis elegans chemotaxis. J Neurosci. 1999 Nov
1;19(21):9557-69.

Wicks SR & Plasterk RHA High-Gradient Soluble-Compound Chemotaxis Assay.
