This conference is intended as the successor to the wildly successful EMBO Workshop on the evolutionary biology of Caenorhabditis held in Portugal in May, 2006. This meeting would cover the evolution of Caenorhabditis species and also of other nematodes. Participants would include basic researchers working in the areas of population genetics, molecular evolution, genome evolution, experimental evolution, developmental evolution, biodiversity and phylogenetics, ecology, and the evolution of parasitism. The meeting would be for both bioinformaticians and wet-lab biologists. The overall goals are to bring together people from diverse fields to further develop the Caenorhabditis system for comparative biology and to better connect it to the wider context of the phylum Nematoda. To help our application for funding for the conference, we need to know how many people would be interested in attending. . If you are inclined to attend such a conference, please email either of and let us know: 1. What is your position? (principal investigator/postdoc/graduate student/other) 2. If not a PI, with what lab are you affiliated? (give name of PI) 3. If a PI, how many people from your lab would attend? 4. If you attended the 2006 meeting, have you initiated any new collaborations or begun new programs of research as a result? [Note that we may quote some responses in our application.] Thanks in advance, Eric Haag (University of Maryland) ehaag@umd.edu Avril Coghlan (Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute) alc@sanger.ac.uk From mhansen from burnham.org Tue Sep 25 14:50:51 2007 From: mhansen from burnham.org (Malene Hansen) Date: Tue Sep 25 17:06:17 2007 Subject: [Celegans] Research Assistant position. Message-ID: Burnham Institute for Medical Research, an independent, non-profit, =20 public-benefit basic research organization, located in La Jolla, =20 California, is seeking a Research Assistant for the newly established =20= laboratory of Dr. Malene Hansen. Dr. Hansen=92s research focuses on =20 understanding the molecular mechanisms of aging, using Caenorhabditis =20= elegans as the main model organism. The lab conducts research using =20 a multidisciplinary approach that integrates genetics, molecular =20 biology, biochemistry and microscopy to address our research objectives. Responsibilities of the successful candidate include setting up and =20 organizing a new research lab, handling laboratory administration, =20 overseeing equipment installation and maintenance, ordering and =20 stocking of lab supplies, maintaining various reagent collections, =20 and inventories, training and supervision of new lab personnel, =20 assisting with experiments as determined by the PI. Other duties may =20 include preparing general lab reagents. Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in science, and a minimum of 3 =20 years of practical laboratory experience in biochemistry, molecular =20 biology or genetics. Experience with C. elegans is preferred. =20 Emphasis on responsibility, organization, independency, problem =20 solving, database management and interpersonal skills,. The lab is =20 seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual, who is capable =20 of multi-tasking and team-working. The successful applicant will =20 work in a stimulating academic and cultural environment, and will =20 have the opportunity to contribute as an author on manuscripts. The Burnham Institute for Medical Research offers a competitive =20 salary and benefit package.
