starfish vas. stain

I am a high-school biology teacher and a friend of mine asked how he 
could stain the vascular system of starfish. I think he is planning to 
supply specimens to a company that will supply schools etc. Does anyone 
know of a stain that could be injected while the starfish is still alive 
(or would this work ?)

Is it more practical to inject the stain (or a dye) after the animal is 
killed?

Please respond if you have any info or ideas.
