fat catabolism

In studying respiration, we encountered a statement that in 
order to catabolize fats, it is necessary to burn glucose.  
Why, if beta oxidation breaks down fatty acids to acetyl CoA, 
which can enter the Krebbs cycle directly?  Is it really the 
oxygen that is required?  or the glucose?
